Located in the northern Andes Mountains of Ecuador at an elevation of 8700 feet, the hosteria is situated on 3.5 level, fenced acres with a panoramic view of the valley that surrounds the city of Otavalo, the host to the largest indigenous market in South America. It is situated between two dormant volcanoes: Cotacachi (Huarmirasu) and Imbabura that are sacred to the Quechua natives. This area is known as the land of eternal spring.
The hosteria was originally part of an expansive farm; the main building which houses the restaurant area, laundry, library, massage room, meeting area, garage, workshop space, owner’s quarters, and caretaker’s quarters was built around 1890 and is of pounded earth construction with clay tile roof. The cabins were built in 1994 and are of the same construction. It is rustic with open beam ceilings and a large 3-D mural and has recently been remodeled with new flooring, plumbing, electric and two new bathrooms. The area has approximately 7800 sq. ft.
There are 10 rooms in 2 wings which are separate from the main building. They each have a private bath and a small fireplace. The rooms have a capacity to house 24 guests and boast furnishings made by local artisans. Beautiful gardens and porch swings invite one to relax in the tranquility of the area. The rooms are also of pounded earth construction and were built 17 years ago. Every two rooms share a common propane powered calefon (on demand hot water heater). This area has approximately 2800 sq. ft. The parking lot, which is fenced and secure, was built to accommodate large tour buses and up to 12 smaller vehicles.
A 17500 kw tri-fuel generator was recently installed and generates enough power to allow the hosteria to remain fully functional if a blackout were to occur. There is also a backup water storage tank (10,000 gal.) with a new pump that provides water if the rural water system is down for repairs.
Groups enjoy the walking labyrinth, the sweat lodge and the fire pit where they are able to engage in a variety of group activities.
We are an organic zone and our guests enjoy produce from our organic garden and orchard along with honey from our bees and eggs from our chickens. We have recently constructed a small green house where we start our seedlings and grow our tomatoes.
Over the past three years, the hosteria has been extensively refurbished and remodeled to accommodate the needs of our guests and ourselves. It is a turnkey operation and all the new owner needs to bring is his/her personal effects everything else is here down to the pots, pans and spices.
Currently, the hosteria only hosts groups with advanced reservations.
Taxes for 2011 were $93.
Utilities average about $100 per month (propane, electric, water).
